718 Spyder and Cayman GT4 are launched here in India. The two Porsches hold a price tag of Rs 1.59 Cr. and Rs. 1.63 Cr. respectively.
The 718 Spyder is distinguished by a lightweight convertible top. The GT4, the 718 Spyder has a rear spoiler that automatically rises at 120 km/h, and thanks to the functional diffuser, it is also the first model in the Boxster family to generate aerodynamic downforce over the rear axle.
The cars are powered by a 4.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine producing 414bhp/420Nm and will be offered with a six-speed manual. Both cars get Porsche Stability Management and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear differential lock further enhances the longitudinal and lateral dynamics as well as cornering performance. The Cayman GT4 is capable of hitting 304 kmph while with the Spyder tops out at 301kmph. Both models go from 0-100 kmph in 4.4 seconds.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management damping system lowers the ride height by 30 mm which also lowers the car’s center of gravity. It’s claimed to be “specifically designed for use on the racetrack”. The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system is tweaked to be less obtrusive, and an improved torque-vectoring system is also part of the package. Both, again, have the option of ceramic brakes, along with the standard track-focused caliper system. The 718 Spyder also uses the same Porsche-specific Michelin-made high-performance tyres as the GT4.
Both the Porsche 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4 offer a luxurious two-seater cabin with adjustable leather seats and a multifunctional steering wheel. They also sport a touchscreen infotainment console with support for the latest connectivity options. On the safety front, both the models have six airbags, crash sensors, an engine immobilizer, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and a rear-view camera.
The Porsche GT4 and Spyder’s cabins don’t stray too far off the standard 718 models, although there is a lot more racy Alcantara all over. The GT4 features fabric door-pulls in place of traditional handles, body-colored seat belts and the removal of the infotainment system, which can be reinstalled as a no-cost option. The Spyder, on the other hand, appears to retain standard door handles and its infotainment system. Porsche also offers the 718 Cayman GT4 with the option of a Clubsport package, which includes a steel roll bar at the rear of the cabin, a small fire extinguisher, and a six-point seatbelt for the driver’s side.
The high-performance 718 Cayman GT4 and Spyder have no direct rivals in India. The performance twins join the ‘regular’ 718 models that are currently on sale in India and are priced from Rs 85.95 lakh, for the Cayman and Rs 89.95 lakh, for the Boxster. (ex-showroom, India). The Porsche 718 range rivals the Jaguar F-type and the BMW Z4 in India.
